DESIRE6G Communication activities bring 6G closer to society

As part of its mission to connect cutting-edge 6G research with society, DESIRE6G recently took part in two major outreach events — the Internet Festival 2025 in Pisa, Italy, and Researchers’ Night in Budapest, Hungary. Both initiatives showcased how 6G technologies can be made tangible, interactive, and accessible to all audiences.

At one of Italy’s leading events on digital innovation and future technologies, DESIRE6G partners Consorzio Nazionale Interuniversitario per le Telecomunicazioni (CNIT) and Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna (SSSA) presented an Augmented Reality (AR) Demo titled “Realtà Aumentata e Intelligenza di Rete per Missioni di Ispezione” (Augmented Reality and Network Intelligence for Inspection Missions).

Held on 11–12 October 2025 at the Centro Congressi Le Benedettine in Pisa, the installation was open to all visitors as part of the #IF2025 Internet Festival.
The activity, led by Francesco Paolucci, Andrea Sgambelluri, Igor Barsanti, Faris Alhamed, Massimo Satler, and Michelangelo Guaitolini, demonstrated how 6G networks can support real-time collaboration between human operators, drones, and smart edge devices.

Using AR headsets, visitors could explore a real-time reconstruction of an environment, identifying hidden objects detected through video streaming, distributed AI, and edge processing. The setup combined pre-recorded drone footage with live AR interactions to simulate intelligent network-assisted inspection missions — highlighting how low latency and high bandwidth communication will power the connected systems of tomorrow.

The installation drew significant attention from students, researchers, and the general public, illustrating that 6G innovations can be explained and experienced in engaging, intuitive ways.

💡 “How much bandwidth does a household need?” – Researchers’ Night 2025, Budapest

On 26 September 2025, Sándor Laki and the Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) team presented the demo “Mekkora sávszélességű internetkapcsolat elég egy háztartásnak?” (How much bandwidth does a household need?) at the Researchers’ Night hosted by Ericsson Hungary.

Every year, Ericsson invites its academic partners to showcase research in action. The ELTE team used this opportunity to introduce Quality of Service (QoS) and the per-packet value method developed in DESIRE6G.
Through an interactive setup, visitors — many aged between 8 and 20 years — experimented with different mixes of applications such as cloud gaming, video calls, streaming and downloads, observing how QoS policies manage bandwidth allocation.

By simulating household internet access from 2G to 5G+, the demo helped participants understand how intelligent network control ensures smooth, fair connectivity across multiple services. The stand was busy throughout the night and sparked enthusiastic discussions about network performance and the role of 6G in everyday life.

Bridging Research and Society

Both the Pisa and Budapest events demonstrate DESIRE6G’s commitment to bringing 6G innovation beyond the lab, engaging citizens, students, and stakeholders across Europe.
